THE BUNGALOW

All five musicians spent the summer of 1968 “getting it together” – writing and rehearsing – in a rented bungalow that Nick Nicholas had originally found at 169 Wilson Avenue, near Brighton racecourse. With a loan guaranteed by John Jopp – Mike Jopp’s father – the band bought some Impact amplifiers (I was 23, and thrilled to be playing for the first time in my life through an amplifier that I hadn’t built myself), a Hammond M102 organ, a Gibson EB0 bass guitar, some microphones and, eventually, a grey Ford Transit van. It was strange to be back on bass guitar. I’d missed out on four years of change and evolution in both playing styles and equipment, and it took a while to catch up. With a tinge of sadness I sold my Premier drums to pay the rent.
